Tree Arm

The second arm was much easier. I knew how it was going to look and he knew what to expect pain and time wise, the pace had been set. We skipped some photos on the second arm to show more progress.

Every week we work on another arm so as to let the opposite heal. That way we can work every week instead of working on both and skipping two and this lets one completely heal in case I need to touch up any peeling.

As of now the right arm is complete and teh left will be done in a week and the final photos will then be added.

The tattoo no one thought could be done.

I’m fortunate enough to tattoo in one of greatest tattoo city’s in the world, San Francisco, It is home to some of the best artists and biggest egos coming out of the Industry. It can be just as disappointing meeting your heroes as it is finding out their work ethics.

A lot of my business comes from people being told that their tattoo can’t be done or the artists won’t do it. Their ideas are just on the side of bizarre or just a little out of the ordinary. Nothing that would or should be deemed un-tattooable.

I guess the goal for every tattoo artists is to do work they love doing and nothing else. I myself don’t want to tattoo barbwire arm bands and baby names all day but I’m always up for a challenge.

The Idea:

This person wanted his arm to look like it was growing into a tree from his mid-forearm up his neck and then have his family members Initials carved into the bark.

He was told that it couldn’t be done and it would look weird. Another shop told him that you need to start it with some kind of symbol because a sleeve with to points going away from each other isn’t smart.

It is a little bizarre but I thought it would be a cool challenge to use black and gray to show texture and make the skin appear to look like weathered bark.

The most challenging part was that he needed both arms done in a month before he moved back to Southern California.

Popular Chinese Tattoos & Chinese Dragons

Chinese Tattoos have always been hugely popular. At one stage they were the realm of criminals and the mafia. Now it seems even Hollywood celebrities seem to have caught on to the mystery and allure of the Far East. While it is undeniable that classic Chinese tattoos have an attraction which can easily be appreciated regardless of whether one can understand the often subtle meanings or not.

Aesthetics should be the primary consideration when getting tattooed, and Chinese characters are very well suited to this purpose. While tattoos have always been conversation pieces, Chinese tattoos add another element, since the typical viewer will probably ask you the meaning, which allows the wearer to not only translate the characters, but to explain the story behind the decision to make such a lasting statement.

Meaning is an important question however and for this reason can make Chinese tattoos date very quickly. Often it is not quite what the wearer was told by the tattooist at the tattoo shop or the meaning can become irrelevant after a few years.

Hopefully the person being tattooed has done his or her research and consulted with a native Chinese speaker about the meaning before being inked. Some non Chinese speakers have unwittingly tattooed their bodies with Chinese symbols which when translated become meaningless.

The most common Chinese tattoos are ones that are supposed to represent ideas and qualities like love or strength. Keep in mind that the concepts are aimed at English speakers, and on that level "peace, love and happiness" are easily understandable.

But before you run off to the studio to get one done you should do your research. Selecting a Chinese tattoos deserves careful study and attention. It should have less to do with style and more to do with your character, work, and values. It's permanent, so it's a pretty important decision in your life. In the end, it is important to choose something of lasting appeal not something faddish.

For centuries, the Chinese dragon has been a symbol of power and mystery. Depicted in countless legends, both Eastern and Western, the dragon has provoked man to fear and worship it. In medieval Europe, it was a bloodthirsty, fire-breathing figure. Its malevolence and ferociousness struck terror in all. However, in Asia, it is the contrary. The mighty dragon is a mythical beast long celebrated for its benevolence, intelligence and good will. The Chinese dragon has been a common symbol of identity for Far Eastern cultures.

In fact, Chinese people all over the world are affectionately known as “lung de chuan ren”, or the "descendants of the dragon”. There are several distinct species of Chinese dragons. The Horned Dragon is considered to be the mightiest. The Celestial Dragon supports the heavens and protects the Gods. The Earth Dragon rules all of the earth. The Spiritual Dragon controls the wind and rain. The Treasure Dragon is the keeper of precious metals and gems. The Winged Dragon is the only dragon with wings. The Coiling Dragon dwells in the ocean. The Yellow Dragon is a hornless dragon known for its scholarly knowledge.

If you happen to be someone who is a big fan of the classic American tattoo style and you’re looking for a tattoo artist who can really pull off that style, then look no further than tattoo artist Bert Krak.

Although the classic American tattoo is certainly not new, Krak’s approach injects a new life into the style. Animals become much more than just ink on flesh; they pulse with energy, often with a menacing shine to their features. There’s an abundance of colour and heft throughout his work, retaining the innocence of the storybook-like images that he works with, while adding just the right twist of the macabre. Full Tattoo

Six years ago, Krak began tattooing full time, after apprenticing for two years at Rock-A-Billy Tattoo in Lauderhill, Florida. These days Krak has set himself and his family up in Queens, New York, working for Top Shelf Tattooing. As with many other tattoo artists, Krak’s artistic impulses lead him beyond tattoo work into the mediums of painting and fashion. He recently designed this hat for the San Francisco based artist collective, 1333 Minna.Full Tattoo

Bert Krak tattoos by appointment or walk in and does work beyond the classic American style. Although, with a classic American tattoo style as well defined as his, it’s pretty hard to resist.

To me, hearing a tattoo artist speak about their work efforts in such terms as beauty, flow and simplicity is a surefire sign that the artist in question is a dedicated one. Not only that, but there is a modesty in such a declaration, a reassuring subtext that promises the best of the ability that the artist has to offer. I like that. I like that a lot.Full Tattoo

Yoni Zilber began his tattoo career in his home land of Israel. Tel Aviv, to be more precise, in 1998. Since that time, he has travelled around the world, tattooing his way through various locations in Europe, Asia and America. He currently works at Brooklyn Adorned in Brooklyn, New York.Full Tattoo

Like most tattoo artists, Zilber does many different styles of tattoo work, but he has his own personal favourite that he focuses on. Unlike most tattoo artists, Zilber’s point of focus for his work happens to be Tibetan. Quietly resisting expectations that because he is Israeli he would focus on work related solely to the Jewish faith, Zilber’s commitment to Tibetan art is great:

…[ I ] studied tirelessly on my own, but without a mentor I could only go so far.

As of 2007, Zilber has been studying Tibetan art under the tutelage of Tibetan Tangka painter, Pema Rinzin. Being able to translate Tibetan art into the form of tattoo art is a challenge for Zilber, but one that his work thus far proves him capable of handling. Zilber isn’t lying when he says that he is one of the few tattoo artists working who specializes in the Tibetan style. This brings a great wealth of originality and beauty to his work, not to mention affording the Tibetan art a chance to be seen and appreciated by many more people.

Check out some of Yoni Zilber’s beautiful work.
