Salman Khan's 'Being Human' aims to save lives through healthcare
0 comments Posted by admin at 8:00 AMHe may come across as a macho image in his films like 'Dabangg' and Television advertisements, but there is also a human side to this bollywood superstar that comes across through his 'Being human' foundation which has been striving to alleviate the suffering of underprivileged through its social initiatives.
The Being Human Foundation has partnered with Marrow Donor Registry India (MDRI) to create a world class registry of marrow donors in India for patients who have blood-related illnesses like leukemia, thalessemia, aplastic anaemia and congenital immunodeficiency states.
MDRI was set up in 2008 as an NGO at the Tata Memorial Centre with the sole purpose of creating a registry of committed, voluntary and unrelated donors for those patients requiring bone marrow transplantation and without an HLA-matched donor within their families. However, for the registry to be functional, more than one lakh donors need to be registered. People from the age group of 18-50 years are eligible for donor recruitment.
MDRI and Being Human have reached out to generation next by working with colleges to create awareness of the need for a world-class registry in India.
One of the first colleges to participate in this initiative is KJ Somaiya Institute of Engineering and IT, Sion, who as part of their annual college festival, Surge'11, conducted a marrow donation drive on their college premises along with 'Marrowthon', a 6 km run showing support for the cause.
Stressing on the need for more committed donors, MDRI spokesperson said, "We are glad KJ Somaiya has come forward. We hope that this will pave the way for more colleges and their students to come forth and register with MDRI and thus make their contribution towards saving many more lives." Surge'11 will be held from March 3 to 5, 2011.
On February 23, a class to class presentation was conducted for the in house college students who come forward to show their whole hearted support towards the cause and a whopping 335 names have already been added to the registry in a single day.
For now students are encouraged to step forward to volunteer to give someone a tomorrow - 'Just 10 ml of your blood could save a life - Be Human.'

Bollywood's "Dabangg" actor Salman Khan will be seen doing a daredevil stunt in PepsiCo's new Mountain Dew ad - he jumps from 10,000 feet in a "wingsuit" from which a parachute springs open.
"Everyone is afraid of something or the other at some point of his or her life. But if you try to run away from fear, you'd be tired and eventually fear will win. So the best way to overcome fear is to face it, run through it because 'Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai'," Salman said in a statement.
Salman was initially not so sure about the stunt but he eventually did it. Wingsuit flying is a new sport of flying through the air in a special jumpsuit and pulling the parachute's ripcord as one apporaches the ground.
He is said to be the first celebrity brand ambassador roped in by Mountain Dew.
Alpana Titus, category marketing director (flavoured carbonated drinks), PepsiCo India Beverages, says the new campaign is quite big in terms of quality and budget.
"Salman has jumped from a mountain which was 10,000 feet high. He did have jitters initially but was confident it would work out well and he would be able to overcome his fears in turn," she said.
When asked why Salman was chosen out of all the known faces, Titus said: "Salman was our first choice because he embodies our (Mountain Dew's) tagline 'Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai' accurately and he also has a nationwide fan following. People in not only the metros but also the remote areas follow him."
The 45-second TV commercial will air from Friday and a 60-second commercial will be shown in theatres.

MUMBAI: Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan haven't been on talking terms since Katrina's birthday party in 2008 and it seems the fight will not end.
Imran Khan's wedding bash is indeed a testimony to this fact.
It is, indeed, very interesting to note that no actor has sounded apologetic about his behaviour and are firm on their stance of not talking to each other.
Aamir Khan's invitation to both the warring Khans meant at least a mere chance for the actors to bond yet again. But the actors were stubborn and defiant that it's hard to spot any chance of them reuniting.
Salman Khan entered the bash at around 11:45 to bless the wedding couple Imran and Avantika with brother Sohail Khan. Alas, his exit was as sudden and quick as his entry. In fact he was nowhere to be seen when SRK entered the premises.
The industry is murmuring about another loss of opportunity in burying the hatchet between the two. So, it remains to be seen whether

Salman Khan has gone on record to express his displeasure at the term 'Bollywood'.
The Dabangg actor claimed that it was not an appropriate name for the Indian film industry, NDTV reports.
"One of the first film productions was called Bombay Talkies, so call it that or Mumbai Talkies or Indian cinema. Call it anything but not Bollywood," said Khan.
"Bollywood was for when Mumbai was called Bombay... Hate this bloody name," announced the star.
The actor found support from actor Riteish Deshmukh over possible new names for the industry.
"I totally love the term HI-FI for Hindi film industry, instead of Bollywood," posted Deshmukh on his Twitter account.

The shooting of Bollywood film Bodyguard starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the Pune Okayama Friendship Garden (POFG) has kicked up a storm of protest. Members of the Association of Friends of Japan (AFJ) and other regulars are miffed that people were denied use of the unique garden for the duration of the shoot and add that the facility was damaged by the film crew.
Angry with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for allowing the shoot, members of AFJ now plan to take up the matter with civic body, the state government and even the Okayama state government.
"We are very upset over the PMC's granting of permission for shooting at the garden.
It is shocking that we were not even informed about it, " said Sameer Khale, president, AFJ.
The PMC laid the garden with Japanese Government funds and technical support on the premises of the Pu La Deshpande Udyan on Sinhagad Road in 2003. This is the first time a Bollywood film is being shot there.
The shooting took place over the past three days. Over 2, 000 people who visit the POFG regularly were stopped from entering the premises. The PMC was paid Rs 50, 000 rent by the producer for the three days of shooting.
"I got to know about the shooting when I saw a crowd. We are taking up this issue with the PMC and the state government, with whom the agreement was made by the Okayama state to create a Japanese garden, " Khale said.
Anant Kulkarni, a senior citizen residing in the area, said that the PMC does not allow even visitors who are charged an entry fee of Rs 5 to step on the beautiful lawns, but it allowed the shooting in which the lawn was used in a big way. Kulkarni said the shooting also resulted in some damage to the lawns.
Mandira Chachar, POFG ticket window clerk, said, "We faced a lot of inconvenience as the garbage created by the crew of the film was a lot and out staff members had to do all the cleaning. On Sunday many senior citizens went back disappointed as the garden was closed the entire day. There is a total loss of Rs 10, 000 in revenue over these three days of shooting."
Gardener Viththal Chandare said that food for the crew was prepared on the premises of Pu La Deshpande Udyan and plastic plates and bottles were strewn around.
"We all heaved a sigh of relief after the crew left late in the evening on Monday, " he said.

Director Kabir wants Salman Khan for his next film with Yash Raj.
PSST! If Sallu says yes, this will be his first film with YRF
Kabir Khan is pursuing Salman Khan for his next Yash Raj Films project. The New York director has expressed keen interest in working with Sallu for his next, a romantic drama.
Apart from Kabir, Aditya Chopra, too, has been sending feelers to the actor to accept the film. This would be SK's first Yash Raj film if he agrees to be a part of it.
Dabangg factor
A source remarks on the development, "Dabangg's success is one of the main reasons for the banner pursuing Salman.
Initially, the director was thinking of casting John Abraham as the main lead, but after Sallu's flick became a smash hit, he decided the Dabangg actor would be a better draw."
The source adds that this isn't the first time SK has been approached for a Yash Raj film. He has been made several offers in the past, but none of them worked out.
"The star has never worked with Aditya Chopra, a slose friend of arch rival Shah Rukh Khan. Before signing the film, Sallu wants to be sure the team is all on the same page, creatively. Kabir has told the star that he can't see anyone else playing the part."
The YRF spokesperson didn't deny the development, adding, "YRF is in conversation with various artistes for our forthcoming slate of films.
We will make our announcements shortly after finalising everything. Till then, all this is mere conjecture."
